History

It all began with a small group of people (Deborah Dorsey, Jennifer Lee, Paul and Jean Michaels, Bill and Jackie Hite, Sarge and Eva Duffy and Betty Cole) back in 1982 who started getting together to share their love of birds. Thus the birth of The Middle Tennessee Cage Bird Club in 1983. Early meetings were held at Garr’s Feed Store in Mt. Juliet until moving to the Firemans Union Hall in Donelson, TN. Later meetings were held at the Senior Citizens Club in Donelson until moving to the Fall Hamilton School across from the fairgrounds where they now preside.

Started as a fun fundraiser, the club’s first Bird Fair was held at The Firemans Union Hall in 1984 followed by a Fair and Show in 1985. It was so popular the fairs out-grew the union hall and were moved to various hotels in the Nashville area. These fairs then became a bi-annual event held in April and October and the judged Show an annual event held at the fair in October. These events were later moved to the Tennessee State Fairgrounds as we out-grew the smaller locations and have been held here for the last several years.

Through the years attendance at our fairs started to drop off, most assuredly compounded by the stuttering economy. As a possible solution, several members came together last year with the idea of joining with the exotic pet owners and hosting not just a Bird Fair, but an Exotic Pet Expo. Cin Lofton, along with several active members, stepped up to chair this new venture and our first Exotic Pet Expo became a success in the eyes of club members, vendors and public alike. Our Fall 2013 expo grew even bigger and the Middle Tennessee Cage Bird Club voted to change the club name to Nashville Exotic Pet Club. Now, we are back with a new look, an updated website and a hope, with your help, to make our next show the biggest and best yet.
